To make a day of it

Schanze Adolfseck stands in Lindschied (Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Schanze Adolfseck is a small siege work set on the rocky western bank of the Aar river, opposite the Burg Adolfseck near Lindschied in Hesse. It is thought to have been built during the Thirty Years' War, when the Electorate of Mainz destroyed Adolfseck, allowing the access from the left bank to be sealed off and the castle to be shelled from this spot. The earthwork now appears as a rounded, semi-open rectangle, one side bounded by the steep drop of the hillside, with a low rampart and shallow ditches still visible on the ground. The position also overlies the former line of the Roman limes wall, and a small Roman fort has been identified just to the east.

What to know

  • The site lies in open countryside on a slope above the Aar valley, with no known visitor facilities.
  • What remains are earthworks, a rampart and ditches, rather than any standing structure, so some imagination is needed on site.
  • Reaching it involves walking over natural terrain, close to the Aartalbahn railway line.
  • The site is protected as a Bodendenkmal, meaning excavation or collecting finds is subject to permission.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility information are available for this site.
