To make a day of it

Burg Grimburg stands in Grimburg (Landkreis Trier-Saarburg), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Grimburg stands on a rocky spur in the Saar-Hunsrück nature park, south of the village of Grimburg in Rhineland-Palatinate. Built around 1150 by the lords of Saarbrücken, it became one of the seven territorial strongholds of the archbishopric of Trier after being rebuilt at the end of the twelfth century. Left to ruin since the wars of the seventeenth century, it has undergone partial reconstruction since 1978, which brought back the keep, the residential building and traces of the chapel. Covering an unusually large area for a Trier castle, the site is now open for visitors to walk through.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin, its main structures uncovered through excavation work since 1978.
  • Reaching the spur involves a walk uphill, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • The chapel and the Burghaus are still used for civil weddings arranged through the Hermeskeil registry office.
  • With no ticketing body setting hours or fees, the ruin is generally freely accessible.
  • The grounds also host open-air cultural events such as medieval-themed festivals and performances.
