Schloss Münchweiler stands in Nunkirchen, a district of Wadern, as the only building in Saarland that still clearly reflects an ambitious baroque country estate design. Baron Franz Georg Zandt von Merl had it built in three phases between 1749 and 1763, to plans by the architect Christian Kretzschmar, with the main house further extended by 1773. Its ornate portal, outdoor staircase and double-flight interior stairs still show the quality of the high baroque work. After decades of decline and a restoration begun in 1997, parts of the complex are open to the public again.
