To make a day of it

Burg Dagstuhl stands in Wadern (Landkreis Merzig-Wadern), in Saarland, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Dagstuhl Castle is the ruin of a medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Wadern, within the Saar-Hunsrück nature park. Founded before 1290 by the knight Boemund of Saarbrücken, it was extended over centuries by several co-owning families before being deliberately dismantled in the eighteenth century. Visitors today can walk through the remains of a fortified complex stretching more than three hundred metres, with its moat, ramparts and two bastions, alongside multilingual information panels.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin, with no enclosed building to visit inside.
  • The ruin stands on a hilltop, so expect a walk uphill to reach it.
  • Information panels in four languages guide visitors through the remains.
  • Costumed tours and events are occasionally held on the grounds.
  • Dagstuhl Palace, at the foot of the hill, is a separate building and not part of the ruin.
