Burg Daun stands on a basalt outcrop above the town of Daun in the volcanic Eifel region. Celtic and Roman occupation preceded the medieval stronghold, ancestral seat of the lords of Daun, which was destroyed several times over the centuries and finally ravaged in 1689 by the troops of Louis XIV. Only a ring wall and a small bastion turret with arrow slits survive from the former fortress, while the hunting lodge built in 1712 on the ruined main house now houses a hotel.
