While some records date its origins to the 10th century, recent archaeological findings and the research of A. Antonow point instead to a construction in the mid 12th century, possibly into the early 13th century. What remains today are fragments of its shield wall, built of bossed ashlar masonry, the main surviving element of this former stronghold.
