To make a day of it

Burg Birkenfels stands in Flachslanden (Landkreis Ansbach), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Birkenfels was a moated motte castle, now vanished, that once stood near the road to Brünst at the southeastern edge of the hamlet of Birkenfels. It is not a castle one can tour in the usual sense but rather an archaeological site: what remains is a terraced mound about twenty metres across, separated from the adjoining plateau by a ditch some six metres wide. A few remnants of masonry and a barrel-vaulted cellar, now built into existing houses, are the only traces of the former stronghold.

What to know

  • No standing building remains: only a terraced mound and a ditch can still be seen on site.
  • Fragments of walls and a vaulted cellar survive but are incorporated into present-day private houses and cannot be visited.
  • The site lies in the hamlet of Birkenfels, part of the municipality of Flachslanden, in the Landkreis Ansbach in Bavaria.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as this is essentially an open-air archaeological remnant.
  • A visit amounts to a short walk around the mound and ditch, with no reception or on-site amenities.
