Schloss Virnsberg rises above the village of Flachslanden in Bavaria, built on a hilltop overlooking the Kemnath stream. What sets it apart is its combined layout, a hilltop stronghold joined to a moated residence, a legacy of occupation dating back to the 13th century. For more than five hundred years the complex belonged to the Teutonic Order, which kept it as a Catholic enclave within Protestant Ansbach territory. Visitors can still make out a lower courtyard with farm buildings arranged in a horseshoe, an access ramp circling the core structure, and an octagonal keep standing apart behind the northwest corner.
