Burg Aerzen, also known as Schloss Aerzen, stands in the centre of the village of Aerzen, in the Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont, Lower Saxony. First recorded in 1293, it passed from the counts of Everstein to the archbishops of Cologne, was later pledged to the bishopric of Hildesheim, and eventually came into the hands of the von Münchhausen family, who added the Renaissance-style north wing in the sixteenth century. Burned during the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt afterwards, it long served as an administered farming estate before its restoration turned it into a cultural centre that now hosts regular events. Visitors can see wings built across very different periods, from fourteenth-century Gothic stonework to eighteenth-century timber framing.
