To make a day of it

Auerburg stands in Oberaudorf (Landkreis Rosenheim), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Auerburg is the ruin of a rock castle standing 543 metres above Oberaudorf, in the Inn valley. Built on a site inhabited since the Bronze Age, it held an early fortification from the 12th century, raised by local nobility before passing to the Wittelsbach dynasty. After 1504 it served as a border stronghold facing Tyrol, was captured by Austrian troops in 1743 and demolished in 1747. Only scant remains survive today, on grounds that visitors may walk through freely.

What to know

  • The excavation site is freely accessible, with no fixed opening hours.
  • Only wall remnants survive, leaving much to the imagination about the former stronghold.
  • A herd of llamas grazes the grounds to keep vegetation down, giving the site an unusual touch.
  • The Museum im Burgtor, housed in the old fortified gate on the road to Kiefersfelden, tells the history of the Auerburg.
  • Reaching the rock requires some physical effort, as the terrain is steep and unimproved.
