To make a day of it

Burg Ober-Falkenstein (Flintsbach am Inn) stands in Flintsbach am Inn (Landkreis Rosenheim), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Ober-Falkenstein, also known as Altfalkenstein or Rachelburg, is a ruined hilltop castle above Flintsbach am Inn in Bavaria, overlooking the Inn valley. What remains are the foundations of a surrounding wall and a building, likely a tower house, perched on the Rachelfels rock some 200 metres above the river. Once the seat of the counts of Falkenstein, its surviving masonry dates to around 1110, making it one of the oldest stone castles preserved in Bavaria. Today the site is little more than overgrown foundation walls hidden in the forest above the old trade route to Tyrol.

What to know

  • Only scattered foundation remains survive, hidden in the woods, with no standing structure to see.
  • Reaching the site means walking through forest up to the top of the Rachelfels, with no facilities mentioned.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open-air ruin freely accessible.
  • The site mainly interests visitors drawn to medieval history and archaeology rather than a dramatic ruin.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
