To make a day of it
Burg Wasserburg stands in Wasserburg am Inn (Landkreis Rosenheim), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Wasserburg rises above the town of Wasserburg am Inn, which sits on a peninsula almost entirely encircled by the river Inn. Its origins go back to the 12th century, though most of what stands today results from rebuilding carried out in the 15th and 16th centuries, which turned the former stronghold into a late Gothic Schloss with a steep gabled roof and stepped gables. The stronghold passed to the House of Wittelsbach after a seventeen-week siege in 1247. The buildings today house a land surveying office and a retirement home run by a convent, so visits are generally limited to the exterior and the surrounding grounds.
What to know
- The castle houses a local government office and a retirement home, so the interior cannot be freely visited.
- The building is best seen from the streets and riverside of the old town below, or from the higher ground of the peninsula.
- The original keep was demolished in 1779 and the moats filled in 1809, which explains why the current structure looks more like a residence than a fortress.
- No opening hours, admission fees, or accessibility arrangements are published, as access is limited to the exterior grounds.
- The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
