To make a day of it

Amelungsburg stands in Hessisch Oldendorf (Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Recorded dating: 3rd century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Amelungsburg is not a castle in the usual sense of standing walls and towers, but an ancient hilltop earthwork on the Amelungsberg plateau, part of the Süntel ridge. Excavations in 1954, 1955 and 2005 traced its first construction to the pre-Roman Iron Age, around 400 BC, with use continuing at least into the middle of the 3rd century BC. The site was reoccupied in the 8th century, when an additional outer rampart is thought to have been added during the Saxon Wars waged by Charlemagne. What remains visible today is a long earth bank and traces of a ditch, set within a protected nature reserve.
