The Altenbaumburg stands on a long rocky spur above the village of Altenbamberg, overlooking the Alsenz valley. Dating from the 13th century, this ruined castle was the ancestral seat of the Raugraves before passing to the Palatine counts and gradually falling into decay from the late Middle Ages onward. The site spreads across three successive enclosures, from the breached keep of the upper ward to the Gothic remains of the lower ward, where a building reconstructed in the 1980s now houses a restaurant. Visitors can see a shield wall once some fifteen metres high, a corner tower, and the massive foundations of the former keep.
