What the French Ministry of Culture records

La maison forte de Vertrieu est mentionnée dès 1289. En 1355, le Rhône devient frontière entre la Savoie et le Dauphiné, et le château fait alors partie d'une série de forteresses le long du fleuve. Entre 1638 et 1664, le château Neuf est édifié au bord du Rhône pour répondre au nouveau mode de vie de l'époque. Le château Vieux est dès lors laissé à l'abandon. Des restaurations et aménagements sont entrepris vers 1840 sur le corps de garde de la basse cour. Le reste des bâtiments est conservé comme ruines romantiques.
