The Château Vieux of Vertrieu is a stronghouse from the thirteenth century, first mentioned in 1289. When the Rhône became a border between Savoy and Dauphiné in 1355, this castle took its place in a line of fortifications guarding the river. Replaced in the seventeenth century by the Château Neuf, built between 1638 and 1664 downstream to suit new ways of living, it has remained in ruins, with partial restoration undertaken around 1840. The site retains the character of romantic ruin that defines its present state.
