On a height above Fenouillet, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, the ruins of Saint-Pierre castle mark the former seat of the viscounts of Fenouillèdes, occupied from the 9th to the 13th century. Abandoned by the 14th century, the site still holds the remains of a Romanesque church and traces of a fortified settlement facing the nearby Sabarda castle. Archaeological excavations have been carried out here since the early 2000s, gradually revealing this medieval stone complex.
