What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château s’élève sur un rocher situé au sud du château Saint-Pierre et contrôle ainsi des angles de vue impossibles à maîtriser depuis le château principal. La première mention du site remonte à 1109-1117. Sur un plan architectural, il constitue un exemple, rare par son homogénéité, de fortification secondaire venant compléter le dispositif de surveillance de l’ancienne frontière, constitué par les grandes forteresses royales des Corbières. Au pied du rocher supportant Sabarda, au nord, se trouvent les vestiges de l’ancienne église Saint-André. Cet édifice est cité en 1011, dans la bulle du pape Serge IV, parmi les églises constituant le patrimoine du monastère Saint-Pierre de Fenouillet.
