Château Gaillard is the oldest private mansion in Vannes, built in stone in the early 15th century by Jean de Malestroit, chancellor to the Duke of Brittany, at a time when the rest of the town was built in timber frame. Duke Pierre II acquired it in 1456 to house the Parliament of Brittany, which sat there until Brittany's annexation to France in 1532. The building retains Renaissance paintings and woodwork, a coffered ceiling, mullioned windows and a polygonal stair tower on the courtyard side. It now houses the city's history and archaeology collections, spanning prehistory to the Gallo-Roman period.
