To make a day of it

Château du Vernay stands in Charette (Isère), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château du Vernay stands in the commune of Charette, in the Isère department, in a ruined state resulting from a century of gradual neglect. Built in the 19th century for Baron Ferdinand de Ruolz, the mansion is where Hilaire de Chardonnet developed artificial silk, the forerunner of viscose, in a workshop set up in the outbuildings. Its neoclassical façade, raised with a mansard floor under the Second Empire, still bears witness to the era when the estate hosted exiled royal pretenders. Consolidation works begun in 2019 made the building watertight and weatherproof.
