To make a day of it

Château du Schrankenfels stands in Soultzbach-les-Bains (Haut-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Schrankenfels is a ruined hilltop castle in the Haut-Rhin, standing above the village of Soultzbach-les-Bains. Built in a single construction phase around 1220-1230, it still shows a pentagonal keep reduced to about ten metres in height. Visitors come mainly for the remote forested setting and the view over the Krebsbach and Runzbach valleys, more than 450 metres below the ridge.

What to know

  • The site is reached by a roughly two kilometre walk from the village, on a ridge at 782 metres above sea level.

  • The castle was closed to the public in 2019 due to falling stones, so it is worth checking current access before going.
  • A second, smaller castle, the Haneck, stands about 250 metres away on the same ridge and can be combined with the same outing.
  • The site is an open-air ruin with no opening hours or ticketing.
