In the heart of the village of Le Monteil-au-Vicomte, in the Creuse department, stand the ruins of a fortified castle dating back to the 14th century, cradle of the du Monteil-au-Vicomte family, a branch of the viscounts of Aubusson. What remains today are sections of wall linking two corner towers, the north tower being the best preserved, with a barrel-vaulted room on the ground floor. Sold as national property during the Revolution, the building was long used by locals as a stone quarry before receiving protected status.
