To make a day of it

Château de Villattes stands in Léré (Cher), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: limite 15th century 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

In Léré, in the Cher department, the Villattes château raises its Renaissance main building beside a moat fed by the Judelle stream. The courtyard facade, pierced by large flamboyant mullioned windows and marked by an octagonal stair tower, dates from around 1500 and shows the transition between Gothic and early Renaissance styles. Visitors can also see a 17th century painted trompe l'oeil oratory and a 16th century dovecote restored in 2018. The estate has remained in the same family line since the 1500s, often passed down through women.
