The château de Varennes stands in Quincié-en-Beaujolais, facing Mont Brouilly, combining the remains of an 11th-century stronghold with Renaissance alterations. Visitors can see a square medieval tower, 16th-century winegrowers' outbuildings sheltered under a hall with Gothic timberwork, a lordly dovecote and an inner courtyard framed by horseshoe-shaped buildings. The site bears traces of eight centuries of history, from the lords of Beaujeu to the Nagu family, one of whose members met a tragic fate during the Revolution.
