What the French Ministry of Culture records

La construction du château demeure peu, voire pas documentée. La seigneurie, mentionnée dès 969, passe à la maison de La Vergne en 1410. C’est à elle que revient le majeure partie des travaux auxquels la demeure est redevable de ses dispositions actuelles. L’organisation urbaine médiévale et l’emprise des fortifications sont difficilement repérables en raison des nombreux aménagements post-médiévaux. L’enceinte urbaine du 14e siècle, selon un plan du compoix de 1770, est un quadrilatère irrégulier, ponctué de tours et percé de trois portes. Aux 14e et 15e siècles, d’importants remaniements ont lieu (croisées à modénature gothique ou Renaissance) et le château semble bénéficié d’un certain prestige au 17e siècle, ainsi que le laisse supposer la présence de l’évêque de béziers, en 1605. Au 18e siècle, la demeure a alors pratiquement tout perdu des caractères d’un château-fort pour se transformer, au 19e siècle, en grosse maison bourgeoise.
