To make a day of it

Château de Saint-Ouen de Chemazé stands in Chemazé (Mayenne), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument. The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

At Chemazé, in the Mayenne region, the château de Saint-Ouen owes its distinctive character to a Renaissance stair tower that its patron, an early 16th century abbot of La Roë, had built far more lavishly than the adjoining residence. The upper gallery is decorated with wheels, a punning reference to the arms of the abbey of La Roë, while the lily and ermine emblems recall its builders' loyalty to the crown. Visitors come mainly to see this tower and its monumental spiral staircase, along with a carved fireplace preserved in one of the rooms.
