Sur un emplacement fortifié dès le 13e siècle pour des familles féodales angevines, la nouvelle fortune des officiers royaux de Château-Gontier (après les troubles des guerres de religion) permet à la famille d'Héliaud d'édifier un château pendant la première moitié du 17e siècle. Ce château, à escalier monumental et pavillon, est agrandi au 18e siècle.
