To make a day of it

Château de Mayenne stands in Mayenne (Mayenne), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 11th century, 12th century, 16th century). Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on August 8, 2026.

Standing on a rocky spur above the Mayenne river, this castle holds rare remains of a 10th-century Carolingian palace, uncovered during excavations that began in 1993. The site reflects a long military history, from a residence of the barons of Mayenne to a garrison castle and later a prison, before becoming an archaeological museum. Visitors can see masonry layered across several centuries, from the medieval round keep to the early medieval upper halls.
