Château de Talmont-Saint-Hilaire stands in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire (Vendée), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 11th century, 14th century, 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Perched on a rocky spur above Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, this ruined medieval castle bears the marks of nearly six centuries of successive building work, from a keep born out of an old church bell tower to defensive additions made during the Renaissance. Visitors can still make out the enceinte, the towers and the remains of the great hall, before Richelieu ordered the stronghold dismantled in the 17th century. The site reads like an open history of military architecture, from early feudal mound to later fortification.
