Le château-fort fut bâti en 1370. Au milieu du 17e siècle, les nouveaux propriétaires engagèrent d'importants travaux de modernisation du logis. En février 1796, un combat s'engagea dans le château entre les Républicains et une quarantaine de Vendéens. En 1806, le château fut vendu comme bien national à l'ancien chirurgien de Louis XVI. Durant la première guerre mondiale, l'édifice servit d'hôpital. Le château a été construit sur un petit socle rocheux dominant une plaine marécageuse. Il comprend une enceinte hexagonale de la fin du 14e siècle, augmentée d'une grosse tour cylindrique construite au 15e siècle. L'enceinte primitive était flanquée de sept tours en fer à cheval. A l'est, deux de ces tours, réunies en châtelet, encadrent une porte protégée par une herse et un pont-levis. La tour sud-ouest a disparu. Celle du sud a été remplacée par le donjon actuel qui renferme trois salles superposées. Le premier niveau, transformé en chapelle, est voûté en coupole sur croisées d'ogives. Les niveaux supérieurs sont desservis par un escalier à vis. Le logis et les communs sont disposés autour d'une cour rectangulaire. Un escalier hélicoïdal dessert les étages et permet l'accès au chemin de ronde. Le logis renferme une vaste salle seigneuriale du 14e siècle.
