What the French Ministry of Culture records

Forteresse édifiée au 12e siècle, à l'époque des guerres de Cent ans. L'édifice se présente comme une masse cantonnée de quatre tours aux angles. Il a été remanié au 19e siècle. La tour nord a été démolie, une terrasse a été aménagée sur la face sud et tous les murs ont été percés de fenêtres. Du 13e siècle date la galerie dite "Jeu de Paume", avec sa colonnade sur la façade orientale. Au 15e siècle, communs et remparts sont remaniés. Il subsiste les courtines nord et est se retournant en équerre, cantonnées à chaque angle d'une tour. Deux d'entre elles possèdent encore les consoles de leur chemin de ronde. Cet édifice inspira à George Sand son roman "Les Maîtres sonneurs".
