To make a day of it

Château de Clavières stands in Ardentes (Indre), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château de Clavières stands at Ardentes, in the Indre department, on the site where the princes of Condé established in 1666 one of the largest ironworking complexes of the Ancien Régime. The house was bought in the 18th century by Claude Leblanc de Marnaval, an ironmaster who ran the works for several decades before going bankrupt in 1778. The estate remains linked to the industrial history of the Indre valley, where three forges operated until 1874. The surrounding area still holds a few traces of that activity, including a water reservoir and the remains of an old forge bakery.

What to know

  • The industrial buildings of the forges have almost entirely vanished, with only the water reservoir of the Forge Basse still visible.
  • The old bakery of the Forge Haute retains its oven, occasionally used again during local festivities.
  • The château itself is a property tied to the history of the ironmasters rather than a documented publicly open monument.
  • The site sits within a wide forest and river landscape around Ardentes, worth visiting mainly for its industrial history.
