To make a day of it

Château de Reigné stands in Souvigné (Deux-Sèvres), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Reigné Castle, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, has undergone several transformations: altered in the 16th century, expanded with two pavilions in the early 18th century, and thoroughly restored following a fire in 1793. Architect Lafargue redesigned the internal circulation and added galleries connecting the different sections. The building retains several early features, including fireplaces, and stands within a complex of outbuildings and agricultural structures arranged around the courtyard.

What to know

  • The building is listed as a historical monument: only the facades, roofs, well, and dovecote are protected.
  • The castle is not a ruin: its various building campaigns from the Middle Ages to the 20th century exemplify the evolution of residential architecture.
  • Three wings of outbuildings arranged in a U-shape to the south complete the protected complex.
