To make a day of it

Château de la Villedieu-de-Comblé stands in La Mothe-Saint-Héray (Deux-Sèvres), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Set on an island surrounded by moats, the château de la Villedieu-de-Comblé still shows traces of its original defensive purpose, built with permission from Charles VII against the English threat. The residence was largely rebuilt in the 16th century, its south facade adorned with a frieze of eighteen carved heads and corbelled turrets. The access bridge, rebuilt in 1889 in a 17th-century style, leads to a courtyard lined with equally notable outbuildings. Layers of different periods are visible here, from the medieval fortified house to a pavilion added in the 19th century.
