To make a day of it

Château de Pionsat stands in Pionsat (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century, 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Pionsat, in the Puy-de-Dôme, stands a complex built in two clearly separate periods: a fortified core from the 14th century, raised to strengthen Auvergne's defences against English raids, and a Renaissance wing added by the Chazeron family at the end of the 16th century. Of the original structure with its four towers, only part of the main range and the south-east tower remain, while the Renaissance wing shows broad panels of red brick with hints of Italian influence. The irregular pentagon plan around an inner courtyard, already recorded on a 1793 map, can still be traced in the layout of the buildings today.
