What the French Ministry of Culture records
Face au Poitou, sur le haut Layon, le château de Passavant est l'une des places-fortes créées par le comte d'Anjou Foulques Nerra dans le premier quart du 11e siècle. Ruinée, elle est reconstruite après 1210 avec une enceinte cantonnée de tours à quoi s'ajoute au 15e siècle un puissant logis à haute tour d'escalier. Le château est ravagé par les huguenots en 1574. Depuis lors, il n'a été que médiocrement réoccupé (reconstruction d'un nouveau logis au 18e siècle ; puis vers 1930, réaménagement en maison viticole avec celliers) , mais sauvé de la ruine complète grâce à cela.
