Overlooking the Layon valley, Passavant castle stands on a site fortified in the 11th century by Foulques Nerra, count of Anjou, as one of the forward strongholds of his defensive line facing Poitou. Destroyed and rebuilt after 1210, its tower-studded curtain wall gained a residential building with a tall stair tower in the 15th century. Ravaged by Huguenot troops in 1574, the estate has since seen only partial reoccupation, including a new dwelling built in the 18th century and a conversion into a wine-making operation around 1930. Now belonging to the Falloux family, the site combines medieval remains with winemaking activity across a 42-hectare estate.
