What the French Ministry of Culture records

Comme en témoigne les tours rondes, le château est établi à l'emplacement d'une ancienne place forte dont une première mention est faite au 12e siècle à l'occasion d'une donation par Bernard de Mouchac à l'abbaye de la Sauve-Majeure. Au 17e siècle, le château est mis au goût du jour. En 1885, un incendie détruisit une partie du corps de logis central. Le château a conservé son plan quadrangulaire défensif. Deux tours à créneaux et mâchicoulis encadrent une construction à arcades percée d'une porte monumentale, elle-même précédée d'une terrasse bordée de balustres. L'accès est précédé d'une avant-cour bordée de communs avec pavillons d'angle carrés et une écurie. Au sud, les anciens bâtiments de service ont été détruits au 17e siècle et remplacés par une grille d'honneur, séparée par des piliers carrés surmontés de pots à feu. Un puits s'encastre dans cet ensemble s'ouvrant sur un chemin menant directement à l'église paroissiale.
