What the French Ministry of Culture records

Maison forte implantée sur un site occupé depuis la préhistoire. Elle a succédé à la tour établie au 12e siècle, en englobant une chapelle castrale romane encore très complète. Les ruines du moulin médiéval, détruit à la fin du 19e siècle, sont visibles au pied de la courtine est du château. Cette forteresse, ayant souffert des assauts pendant la guerre de Cent Ans, fut reconstruite et réaménagée par Jean de Piis et sa famille au cours des 15e et 16e siècles. Avant la Révolution, la seigneurie appartint à Montesquieu. Vendu à plusieurs reprises et tombé en ruines, le domaine est, depuis quelques années, en cours de restauration et fait l'objet de fouilles archéologiques.
