What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le 20 mai 1354, Edouard III d'Angleterre autorise Pierre Amanieu de Moissac à bâtir une maison forte à Génissac et à y tenir garnison. A la fin du 15e siècle, Michel de Chassaigne possède la seigneurie et fonde en 1500 le chapitre de Génissac pour obtenir de Dieu le rétablissement de la santé de son frère, abbé de la Sauve-Majeure. La chapelle qui subsiste devait dépendre de ce couvent. A la Révolution, le château fut amputé d'une tour d'angle puis abandonné. La forteresse présente un quadrilatère cantonné de trois tours d'angle (dont une a été démolie), le quatrième côté étant occupé par le donjon carré. Les tours sont reliées entre elles et au donjon par des courtines avec chemin de ronde. La cour centrale est occupée par un puits, une salle souterraine voûtée et un souterrain d'évacuation. Le donjon conserve une salle voûtée du 3e quart 14e siècle, 15e siècle. Sur la face nord, des bâtiments ont été ajoutés au 18e siècle.
