Standing at the border between Mayenne and Maine-et-Loire, the Château de Mortiercrolles is a 15th-century stronghold reshaped, around the turn of the following century, into a residence touched by early Renaissance taste. Its surrounding wall, towers, entrance gate and the ruined chapel still show this dual character, part fortress, part showpiece. It was Pierre de Rohan, marshal of Gié and a powerful figure under three kings, who gave the château the form it has kept, blending flamboyant gothic with motifs brought back from Italy.
