Château de Morsang stands in Morsang-sur-Orge (Essonne), in the Île-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 18th century, first half of the 20th century). No visits are on record for this building.
Built in the 1740s for Pierre Durey d'Harnoncourt, a Burgundian financier, the château de Morsang exemplifies an eighteenth-century country house of distinction. Its original structure, a central block with hip roof flanked by two lower wings, was enlarged in the early twentieth century by Christian de Bertier de Sauvigny, who added a ballroom and billiards room. The park, transformed from formal French design to picturesque English style between 1804 and 1827, retains its period pond, serpentine stream, and wooded masses.
What to know
- The main house, two pavilions, and entrance gate are protected as historical monuments, along with the orangery, grotto, and park cascade.
- The property has undergone successive transformations: the Bertier de Sauvigny family from the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries, then a diocesan seminary from 1946 to 1980, before acquisition by the municipality.
- The ground-floor interiors retain paneling partly dating to the eighteenth century, restored and modified during early twentieth-century enlargements.
- The park, originally laid out in formal French style according to 1767 and late eighteenth-century plans, was restructured as a picturesque landscape with an oval pond and winding stream.
