Perched on a rocky spur above the Vicdessos valley, the ruins of Montréal-de-Sos recall one of the major strongholds of the counts of Foix during the Middle Ages. Built at the end of the 12th century, the castle was abandoned and then deliberately dismantled by the counts themselves in the early 15th century. Visitors can still make out a large enclosure flanked by two towers and the remains of a keep raised on a motte, an ensemble revealed through nearly twenty years of archaeological excavation. The site, standing above 880 metres, is reached on foot along a path starting from the hamlet of Olbier.
