In Tarascon sur Ariège, the château de Lacombe began as a fortified house attached to the county of Foix, reshaped in the 17th century by the Deguilhem family on the remains of an earlier stronghold. Its massive quadrangular layout, flanked by corner towers of unequal size, still shows traces of a vanished covered walkway. Inside, three sculpted stucco fireplaces, two of them listed, recall the decorative style associated with major French Renaissance workshops.
