To make a day of it

Château de Montgeard stands in Montgeard (Haute-Garonne), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Standing in the village of Montgeard, in the Lauragais region, this former mansion was built by the Durand family, who grew wealthy from the woad trade, between the 15th and 16th centuries. Partly demolished around 1854, the building still holds a notable room whose mural decoration draws on a 1634 engraving by Jacques Callot depicting the Temptations of Saint Anthony. Vaulted cellars, French-style ceilings and monumental fireplaces recall the prosperity of its original owners.
