To make a day of it

Château de Montboissier stands in Montboissier (Eure-et-Loir), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Of the grand neoclassical château built by Nicolas Marie Potain from 1772 and torn down as early as 1795, only two pavilions remain, set within a park laid out in the English style on the borderlands between the Beauce and Perche regions. One of them, the Pavillon des Roses, owes its fame to François-René de Chateaubriand's stay there in 1817, recalled in one of the best known passages of his Mémoires d'outre-tombe, the episode of the thrush. Visitors come less for a vanished building than to walk through a literary scene, among avenues that still show traces of their former French formality.
