In Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, the Montaut estate preserves what remains of a 14th-century cardinal's residence founded by Pierre Bertrand, at a time when the papacy sat across the Rhône. Visitors come mainly for the former priory manor house, with its mullioned windows and its original painted ceiling, as well as for the underground water system still kept in the park, an unusual medieval feature. The site was altered and partly destroyed after the Revolution, yet the main building has kept much of its original 14th-century fabric.
