In Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, the former palace of Cardinal de Deaux preserves traces of a cardinal's residence built in the mid fourteenth century by Bertrand de Deaux, later extended with a large reception hall under Cardinal Guy de Boulogne. Divided among numerous owners from the sixteenth century onward, the complex gave rise to several separate buildings, including a mansion raised in the seventeenth century by the Calvet family and a chapel erected in 1758 for the Pénitents gris confraternity. The site reflects both the presence of Avignon's cardinals and the later urban changes that followed their departure.
