What the French Ministry of Culture records
La tradition fait remonter l'origine de la forteresse à Charlemagne. Jusqu'au 12e siècle, le château-fort eut des seigneurs particuliers. Avec Henri III, la forteresse passe sous la domination de Cognac et l'occupation anglaise se maintient jusqu'en 1380. La forteresse est alors prise par le maréchal de Sancerre et vraisemblablement démantelée. Elevée à l'extrémité d'une pointe rocheuse, elle est séparée du reste du plateau par un large fossé. Des contreforts de maçonnerie soutenaient l'ensemble. Des tours rondes s'avançaient dans les douves. L'emplacement du donjon n'est pas connu.
