To make a day of it

Château de Lys-Saint-Georges stands in Lys-Saint-Georges (Indre), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur above the Gourdon valley, the château de Lys-Saint-Georges combines an oval twelfth-century keep, still surrounded by water-filled moats, with a residential wing built from the fourteenth century onward. Visitors come mainly for this fortress-like keep, pierced with arrow slits and once equipped with a drawbridge, and for the flamboyant carvings on the fifteenth-century living quarters. The site's history is tied to Jacques Cœur and later to Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, who was held prisoner here in the early sixteenth century.
