What the French Ministry of Culture records
Une forteresse médiévale occupait le site avant l'acquisition du lieu, en 1639, par Henri du Mas, avocat au Parlement de Bordeaux. Le domaine associe alors culture de la vigne et carrières de pierre. Des bâtiments disposés en U abritent communs et logis. Dans la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, un château d'eau est érigé, le parc réaménagé, et des bâtiments vinicoles édifiés. Des projets pour la construction d'un château sont fournis entre 1874 et 1876 par l'architecte Henri Duphot, mais qui n'aboutissent pas. La transformation du château est menée par l'architecte Alphonse Blaquière, dans les années 1888. Les bâtiments en L, avec galeries à colonnades et pavillons, ferment une terrasse qui s'ouvre à l'est sur le parc, et au sud sur la Dordogne et le jardin d'eau. La structure des jardins du 18e siècle reste lisible, marquée par les terrasses, le belvédère et le jardin d'eau.
