What the French Ministry of Culture records

Des documents font remonter le domaine et le château à l'époque de Saint-Louis. Un pavillon de chasse aurait existé à l'emplacement de l'édifice actuel, reconstruit vers 1600. Il était entouré d'une enceinte, avec des tours, détruite par Mac Mahon vers 1865. Seules subsistent trois tours. Le bâtiment du 17e siècle est un long quadrangulaire d'un étage sur rez-de-chaussée, surmonté d'une haute toiture aux combles éclairés de cinq lucarnes de briques aux frontons alternés en arcs ou triangles. Cette façade nord a été complétée, au 19e siècle, d'un perron à quatre colonnes en tronçons et, à l'est, par une chapelle couverte en dôme complétée d'une tourelle d'angle, le tout à la demande de Mac Mahon. La façade sud a été prolongée à la fin du 17e siècle par deux pavillons et ailes en retour, dont les encadrements de fenêtres semblent avoir été repris au 19e siècle. L'aile en retour Est a été complétée, au 19e siècle, par un bâtiment qui lui est perpendiculaire. Le maréchal Mac Mahon, qui en fit sa résidence de 1860 à 1893, année de sa mort, fit construire la salle à manger en terrasse, devant le rez-de-chaussée, ainsi que le jardin d'hiver accolé à la tour de défense. Les intérieurs du château sont marqués par le 19e siècle.
